Turo: Rent Any Car

Rent Any Car

It's actually a thing, you can rent any car that you want.  Granted you might have to live near someone that has that car and is willing to rent it out, but it's better than the standard vehicles that you can get from a rental agency.

One of the coolest things about the Turo app is being able to rent cars that you can almost never get access to, such as Porches, high-end BMW and Mercedes, and Teslas.  There is definitely a higher cost to renting these luxury vehicles, but normally services that do rent them out charge you as much as $250 per hour, rather than the typical $150-200 per day that it will cost on Turo.

How does it work?

1. Sign up for Turo.  You will need  your Drivers' License & a form of Payment..
2. Search your area  Or if you're travelling search near the airport or hotel of your destination.
3. Pick your dates, amenities, insurance, and secure the rental

It is required now that you send a little note to the host of the vehicle.  This is a good idea anyway, as you may want to know how the process of obtaining the vehicle, will work.  Most of the time, it's very simple.

Vehicle Hand-off

1. Greet the Host
2. Check out the vehicle, take some pictures of the inside, outside, and odometer
3. Receive the keys and head out.

Most Hosts are pretty cool people, some even rent multiple vehicles for a living.  You'll know a true Turo Host if they have extra amenities in the car, like bottled water and/or hand-sanitizer.  They'll go over every aspect of the car, if you want to know more.

You will not be charged until the end of your rental or if your rental is longer than a week, you'll only be charged per week.

Vehicle Return

1. Clean the vehicle.  Whether by taking it to the car-wash or just dusting it and vacuuming the interior.
2. Final Check. Take the pictures of inside, outside, and odometer
3. Drop off the vehicle. Whether in-person with the Host, or wherever designated.

A clean car is always appreciated, by both the host and customer. However, if you don't have time or it's raining out, you may have an excuse.  Hosts can however bill you for a messy car or an odd smell (like smoke).  And be aware that you may get billed for any tolls that you incurred during the trip.  Being on-time is good too, but there is a leeway for traffic, usually up to 2 hours. However, after 4 hours you will get a late fee.

Why do this?

It's Awesome.  Having access to nearly any, car anywhere, and with delivery service (the best), it's nearly unbeatable.  The prices on smaller cars cannot be beaten by the traditional rental agencies.  It is possible to rent a smaller commuter car for as little as $16 per day, if done for more than a week. But it's just as amazing to have access to some of the most amazing vehicles in the world (especially if you live in or are visiting Los Angeles).

Tricks to get more out of App.

Recommend this app to your friends and you and they will get $25 off their next trip.  This feature has no limit.  If you recommend 100 people and they all take rides, you will get $2500.

Or if you do not need your vehicle every day, or if you have a spare vehicle that is relatively new-ish (newer than 10 years, and less than 100k miles), try being a Host.  It does take a bit more setup than being a renter, and a certain stalwart attitude toward other people using the vehicle (do not rent out "your baby"). You too could be making more than your car payment every month.
